All You Need to Know About ECAT

Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT) is a test conducted in Pakistan each year for admission in BE/BS/BSc Engineering degree. ECAT is combined entry test conducted by University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore and its various campuses each year. 

Test was started in 1998 on the initiative of Chief Minister Punjab, Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, to counter cheating in the examinations at that time. Each year some 45000 students or more attempt this test while there are only around 3000 seats available, that is why competition is very tough.

ECAT is a pre-requisite for admission in UET Lahore and its affiliated institutions and some public sector engineering institutions in the Punjab. Some private institutions also require ECAT as a pre-requisite.
Some Universities like NUST, PIEAS, GIKI etc do not require ECAT for admission, rather they have their own entry test for interest students. 

ECAT Test Pattern and Marking Criteria

ECAT is a very technical and conceptual based test and is a must for all those who wish to get in their desired engineering Universities. The test is based on the FSC course and comprises of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and English MCQs based test.

The test consists of 100 MCQ's total as

• 10 from English
• 30 from Mathematics
• 30 from Physics
• 30 from the optional subject (Chemistry/Computer etc)

* Total Marks are 400 means each question carry 4 marks (100 total x 4 each = 400)
* There is negative marking of -1 (means if you get 1 MCQ wrong, 5 marks will be deducted)

Aggregate Criteria

In Total Merit, 70% marks of Intermediate/Equivalent Exam and 30% marks of ECAT marks are counted. So in order to evaluate your aggregate or merit, do as following;

MERIT =  ( 0.7 x  % of F.Sc/Equivalent ) + ( 0.3 x  % of ECAT)

* ECAT is very important along with Intermediate marks because if you do not score good in ECAT then you cannot take admission in good Engineering field. So make your every moment count and prepare well.

Students should prepare for their FSC examinations well so that they can easily prepare for ECAT after that. The ECAT is usually conducted in month of July and the registrations starts 5 weeks before that . After getting selected, classes commences in October.

Why Merit Rises and Falls for a Particular Field ?

Merit for a particular field rises when most students with high aggregate manages to secure seats in that field. Electrical Engineering remained top merit field at UET for like 5 years (2010-2014) then in 2015 Mechanical Engineering surpassed it. Since then Mechanical Engineering is the top merit and most famous among good aggregate students.
